HEALTH & SAFETY - A THREE YEAR REVIEW
The Oval Racing Council (ORC), recently set in motion a three year strategy, aimed at putting the whole of short oval motor racing on a stronger footing with regards to Health & Safety matters.
The first phase of this is for a complete overhaul and re-write of the Code Of Practice - Health And Safety At Oval Motor Race Meetings.
The ORC has engaged the services of assorted professional experts, including John Grant (Noise & Accoustics), and Sue Sanders-Peppitt who managed the Health & Safety aspects of the Race of Champions event at Wembley Stadium.
To meet the large cost of the three year plan, the ORC has recognised four sources of funding:
- direct contribution from promoters
- potential grants and subsidies from Authorities
- sponsorship from the sports insurers
- a drivers levy
From 31 May, all drivers in every formula, will pay a £1 levy at every race meeting they compete in. The levy will then be pooled with other funding sources, to contribute towards the cost of the services provided by the Health & Safety professionals.
The length of time that the levy will be in place, will be reviewed towards the end of the season.
